snc 05 shot 30

snc 05 shot 24

this scene was a quick lip syncing shot. remember to keep the son looking angry and dominant over is dad I animated him getting closer to his dad as he shouts out fat.

snc 05 shot 23

for shot 23 was the begging of knowing that the merman was getting pulled in by the winch. as this shot was a long shot, i didn't have to worry to much about the lip syncing of the characters. I still had to animate them arguing and then grabbing onto the boat which wasn't to hard to do, just to keep in mind to get the timing right to when they have to hold on when the boat is at a slanted angle. I was fineshed with this shot and then realised it looked not dramatic enough so I thought of animating the door flying open would make it look like a lot more is going on.

scn05_shot_18a

This shot was my first close up shot i done of one of the characters. I chose to do this shot as i knew i would enjoy animating this scene. This shot didn't take me to long to do as i only had to animate him turning around and then a simple lip sync of a few words. freddy found doing the face controld and lip sync for the fisherman more better, but I found doing the face controls of the son were more clearer and better than the fishermans as the son has it's own facecontrol and the father doesn't.

animating scene 3 shot 11c

Aniamting this shot was a tricky one. I struggled a bit to get thew right fall backwards from the son, to then fall into the lever handle. my first attempt made it look like he's walking back into which then the lever 's speed is to quick from the small force of the son's push. I then attempted a second try to make his fall backwards more dramatic by animating his back swinging back and then swinging to the right. This made his fall back alot more better. the second tricky part was knowing when he should drop his pencil and sketch. I didn't want them both to fall down at the same time as that would make it not look natural. i wanted to show the sketchbook fall first as the sketchbook is seen infront of you rather then the pencil in the left hand is blocked by his body. my opinion from this shot is that I still was not pleased with the fall back of the son. As this shot was only a second long, I didn't want to worry about it for to long long in which i could be wasting time and could be starting on another shot.

animating scene 3 shot 11b

shot 11B was a pretty straight forward easy shot. I was giving next shot from the previous shot (scene 3 shot 11a). It was best that i would animate this shot because of keping the continuity going. with this shot I had to remember for when I animate 11c, to have the son in the same position.

animating scene 3 shot 11a

for scene 3 shot 11a i found this shot to be not hard with the characters but the only issue  had was the throwing of the guts. I found the guts when animating them to be tricky to get the right weight of how they felt. from this video here, the guts I think are to heavy when landing. with not much time left before the hand in, I would say this shot is done because I would end up spending to long on getting the right look of the throw and this shot is only a few seconds long. I would possibly come back to this shot after the deadline to tweak it, but for now it's complete.

correcting the sons texturing

I started off with the hat which the colour that was projecting out was a light green which we wanted a darker green. also a few areas were showing up white. I went back to the layers on photoshop to sort them out.

secondly i went over the hoody which needed a few areas of a dark red and also the sleeve i wanted to be a dark maroon red.

before

after

I then went on to sort out the jeans. the only problem with these were the upper bit was showing a few white areas which easily I only had to paint over with black

then other problem was the hands. from the mudbox file they showed up fine but when omari brought them into the lighting test, one of the layers i put a low opacity to come up with 100% which i didn't want. I also wanted to add a few more freckles to the tops of his hands as well.

before

after
lastly were the shoes which was the biggest problem. we wanted him to have old pairs of converses and from which a previously textures, they looked to new. Also the bottoms of them were to plain and i needed to add an actual texture of the bottoms of real converse shoes

animating scene 03 shot 10b

This shot i animated was not to had. i had yet to animate the fisherman yet so this was my first shot. i was pleased with this outcome as i found this shot not to be to hard and it's duration was only a two seconds long.

the only problem with this shot was when his knife is up in mid air and it has a bit of a flicker to it. and also his neck goes stiff when he lands down. these two minor problem won;t take to long to sort out.

lighting test on the son

after the texturing of the son was done, I then gave over the file to omari to begin the lighting test.
here below is a turnaround of the first test

http://vimeo.com/64529480

I was very pleased with the outcome that omari did but there were a few problem such as a few areas were not painted properly and the shoes to look more worn out and muddy.

texturing to animating

I wanted to texture more props but I realised the lack of time we had left for the deadline, so i began animating and the props were giving to the second years to texture. the first shot i started was scene 02 shot 13. I found this shot took me a while as my animating skills on maya were not amazing as i haven't animated anything on maya since the first year. Helping me animate, we had the motion capture me and freddy acted out a while ago to help us, but i found the motion capture to be off at time such as the arm completely flicking out. I was able to use some of the motion capture but most it what i did was animated by me.

when i finally finished this shot, i found the speed of my animation was not in time with my voice (nooooo!) and if i animated it to my voice, the fall would be in slow motion. I talked to ben in the first year and he said it would be a problem sorting out when putting it together, and if there was a problem, i would have to rerecord the voicing for this shot which wouldn't be to much of a hassle.

final voice recording

freddy wanted someone to act the fisherman voice out but with the amount of time we had before our deadline, freddy decided that he would do the final fisherman voice. a few comments were said that my voice fitted the sons from the beginning, so we stayed with myself doing the final voicing. initially kirk was going to be doing the merman but again with time, he was not here over easter for him to do it so we had someone come in to act him out which his voice actually fitted better than what we thought it would. with many retakes and many horse of voice acting, we had the final voice recordings ready.

texturing (bucket)

after texturing the knife i then went on to texture the bucket. like the knife, i wanted to give the bucket that rusty old look to it with plenty of bumps and dents.

I first started off by giving the bucket a bump map. not going to over the top, I started off with giving it a few rough bumps in certain areas.

I then went on to paint the brown rust. using an image i had of actual rust texture, i began to cover the bucket with it.

more different rust textures were added.

After the the bucket texturing was complete, I then started painting some bloody areas. not going to over the top with the blood to keep it not looking to gruesome.

not forgetting the handle as well. i wanted to paint under the handle to make the bucket look like it's rusted over time from its original grey metal

not forgetting finally i had to paint the mermaids face on. i didn't want to go to crazy with painting a face because I had to remember to make her look ugly, also the only paint the son can use to paint the face on is red and black.

last and final motion capture session

the first mo-cap was not used because we developed the story after it and needed new scenes and a new ending. The second mo-cap went very well and the scenes worked nicely, however Heidi (an animator in our project) noticed that the fisherman character  moved to fast for his size and weight. We all agreed with this and decided to do two days of rehearsals before our final mo-cap session. the rehearsals payed off and the motion capture session went very smoothly and worked well. here is a video below of me and freddy doing a pathetic dance at the end.

texturing the knife.

Using a range of different types of rust textures i was able to build up a combination of different blends of rust and also parts of metal still coming through. i thought by adding blood but not to much blood would make it look more grubby looking. with sculpting, I added a few dents and bumps around the handle and also the blade area, giving it a jaggedy uneven sharpness to it.

Texturing the son

I was giving the son to begin texturing on mudbox. It was my first time on mudbox but I managed to it up quite quickly on how to use it by a few tutorials. I began by starting on his face by getting the right skin colour. I had to make sure that he didn't look to tanned as he doesn't get out in the sun to much also to keep him pale as he is ginger.
I then put some red to his face.
I then went on to add some freckles and also his eyebrows.
finally finishing his face off with some spots to make him look more like a teenager.
I then went on to texture his hoodie by starting off with scanning in my hoodie at a high quietly and then adding it onto the son. this gave his hoodie a sort of netting look to it.
I then started on sculpting cresses at the ends of the sleeves.
Then moving onto sculpting folds around the hoodie to give it a move realistic look.
 More folds around the back.
finished hoodie.
texture from hoodie a scanned in.
Now the trousers were a difficult one. again I scanned an image of my trousers

then adding the bumpy areas to parts such as the pockets.

with the hands i added a few faint areas with red like i did with the face and also a few freckles. again I had to watch the colour of the skin and keep it look the same as the face
I then went onto sculpting knuckles.

the shoes were another tricky one. I had to make sure to make them look a bit realistic but not to realistic
 adding dirt and muddy patches.
Finally the hat.

sculpting a few bumpy areas.
